According to Nick Denton, people like me don't exist, because I'd never heard of Gawker until the trial results were announced. This book was so good, that I quit listening to my podcasts in order to listen to this audiobook. I would still recommend- fascinating story. But I’m rating it 3 stars because the audio narration was pretty terrible in my opinion. If I would have read the physical book, maybe I would up my rating. This needed a good trimming by an editor.Īll in all, a fun non-fiction read for fall. The Machiavelli comparisons were good- and then overused. Things were repeated, points pounded and pounded- no use beating a dead horse. In addition, the book needed to be significantly shorter. The only reason I continued to plow through it, was because the writing was good and the story was interesting. To be honest, he sounded quite mechanical and like he should have given his nose a good blow before reading. I understand wanting to take ownership of your own writing by narrating it, but Holiday should never have taken this liberty. I listed to this on audio, which Holiday himself narrates.

How did he manage to get all this information from each of his sources? I’d love to know. I loved the intricate details, the insider scoop, and the juicy info. The information is great and his comparisons to Machiavelli are brilliant. With his unique perspective and exclusive access to all the key players, Ryan Holiday transforms these events into both a dissection of that controversial word and methodology - conspiracy - and an eye-opening cautionary tale on the use, abuse and consequences of power and secrecy in the modern age. Some may remember the juicy celebrity news source “Gawker”, and its some of its sister sites such as Jezebel. It had been one of the most covered and surreal legal cases in history and no one had suspected a thing. These two seemingly unrelated events were in fact the bookends of a nearly decade-long plot masterminded by Thiel, for both obvious and non-obvious reasons. In 2016, Gawker was forced to declare bankruptcy after a $140 million dollar judgment in a Florida court over an illegally recorded sex tape of Hulk Hogan with his best friend's wife. In 2007, a short blog post on Valleywag, the Silicon Valley vertical of Gawker Media, outed the enigmatic Facebook and PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel as gay. And of the few that do exist, fewer are ever discovered, let alone explained.
